Before, this was a concrete area used as a parking space.
This became a lovely secluded seating area to catch the sun. From the other direction, this courtyard design included a bike store neatly screened from the sitting area.
By careful selection of plants with a vertical ‘habit’ to provide colour and interest in such a limited space, I managed to fool the eye that the courtyard was larger than it actually was. Variety of leaf size, colour and shape really helps in this situation. Also, with a limited space, keeping the planting simple really works well. The art is in having some variation but not so much that it looks messy or fussy. I even squeezed in a tiny pond in the corner which was amazingly well occupied, even in such an urban setting!
